Mention “seafood” in Myrtle Beach and someone is sure to point your toward the popular seafood Calabash-style restaurants and buffets, or to the Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk in the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina.” But ask about sushi and you might get a few blank stares. They might not be decked out in neon lights or have the long lines like Myrtle Beach’s most famous seafood eateries, but there are lots of top-notch sushi bars around town if you know where to look. Here are five favorites among our guests at Compass Cove Oceanfront Resort:
* Art Burger Sushi Bar: Four seemingly unrelated words come together to form a unique experience on the oceanfront in Myrtle Beach’s downtown district. Located on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk near Plyler Park and the old Pavilion site, Art Burger Sushi Bar serves a diverse menu that ranges from hand-crafted burgers to hand-rolled sushi. Also serving as an art gallery featuring local works, ABSB’s sushi rolls are artistic in their own right. Select from a long list of creative rolls, or just say “Omakase” and let the chef roll up something special for you. Perfect for couples and parties with pro- and anti-sushi taste buds.
* Co Sushi: For years the only thing missing from The Market Common’s culinary lineup was a great sushi place – at least until Co Sushi came along. This Charleston-based regional chain delivers a one-of-a-kind sushi experience with items like pressed sushi or sushi sandwiches. Co Sushi also features all the classic sushi rolls and pan-Asian dishes, as well as an option of upscale dining inside or more casual seating on the covered patio deck for a sunny day. This place is conveniently located near Compass Cove Oceanfront Resort in case you and your crew get a sudden craving for sushi.
* King Kong Sushi: Located conveniently close to Broadway at the Beach’s nightlife district, King Kong sushi is the perfect place to dine before an evening out at the clubs. True to its colossal namesake, King Kong Sushi makes jumbo-sized rolls that can serve as a meal for real sushi lovers. The Tuna Mania roll features traditional spicy tuna rolls wrapped in another layer of Ahi tuna that is finished with a blow torch. The lunch menu offers light combinations for a low price for those who want to take a break from a day of shopping. King Kong Sushi also serves a variety of Asian dishes and private hibachi tables.
* Mr. Fish: With a name like Mr. Fish, well, you had better have the freshest in town. This locally owned and operated hot spot delivers with a massive selection of seafood and some of the best sushi in town. Featuring a separate sushi bar from the dining area, Mr. Fish provides a casual and friendly environment to feast on goodies from the sea. Daily specials reflect the fresh catch at the local seafood markets, which Mr. Fish also operates next door.
* Soho/Rooftop 21: For repeat visitors, Soho has relocated across the street (21st Avenue North) and added an extra feature of a rooftop bar that overlooks the downtown district. Even better than the view is the creative sushi menu, including the popular Japanese Stone Grill that allows the customer to play sushi chef and heat their strips of filet on a hot stone. The Tuna Tataki and Jalapeno Yellowtail are also hits with the sushi crowd. Non-sushi eaters have lots of options on the fusion menu, and the view makes it a great place for after-dinner drinks.
