Myrtle Beach may be best known for its fun in the summer sun, but there are also lots of entertaining activities during the off-season for our winter visitors.
Not only can guests at Compass Cove Oceanfront Resort experience the wonders of winter in Myrtle Beach, included smaller crowds, lighter traffic and milder weather, they also can enjoy all the great indoor activities that are often lost in the mix during the summer months. Here’s a look at the January 2020 lineup:
Arts & Crafts:
Located only a half-mile from Compass Cove, the Burroughs & Chapin Art Museum is free to the public and offers a series of programs that open in January and run through April. Sara Golish’s “Birds of Paradise” exhibit opens Jan. 14, followed by “Voice Lessons” on Jan. 19 and Joseph Hoffman’s Tribute to Andrew Wyeth on Jan. 24. For a hands-on craft experience, Conway Glass will hold its monthly glass-blowing demonstration on Saturday, Jan. 4.
Attractions:
Myrtle Beach’s indoor attractions take center stage in the off-season so you are guaranteed a good time regardless of the weather. Ripley’s is the first name in family entertainment with its Aquarium, Believe It Or Not Odditorium, Haunted Adventure, Mirror Maze, Laser Strike and Moving 5D Theater among the many options. Other indoor attractions include Broadway at the Beach’s Hollywood Wax Museum, WonderWorks, and The Simpsons in 4D Theater.
Concerts:
Myrtle Beach cranks up the music in January with several concerts and tribute shows, beginning with the House of Blues’ Ultimate 80’s Party Featuring Tiffany on Jan. 3, An Evening with Johnny Lang (Jan. 17) and the Third Annual Carolina Country Music Awards (Jan. 25). The Alabama Theater presents tributes to Peter Paul and Mary (Jan. 11), Patsy Cline Starring Gail Bliss (Jan. 17-18) and Crystal Gale (Jan. 28). The Carolina Opry hosts “Stayin’ Alive: Bee Gees Tribute ” (Jan. 18) and An Evening With Travis Tritt (Jan. 19).
Festivals:
Art and music lovers can find both at Punk Fest (Jan. 25) at Grand Park in The Market Common with a full day of food, drink and live music. Sponsor Wicked Weed Brewing will release a new brand of its beer each hour, with food vendors, arts and crafts vendors and other entertainment available. The next day, Grand Park also hosts the annual Souper Supper (Jan. 26), which features dozens of soups prepared by local chefs with live music and various vendors.
Sports:
The winter weather is often mild enough to enjoy golf, biking, hiking and other outdoor activities in Myrtle Beach, but there are options for those chillier days as well. TopGolf and Dave & Buster’s at Broadway at the Beach allow visitors to get into the action, and Cancun Lagoon Miniature Golf, Myrtle Beach’s only indoor putt-putt course, is only a few blocks away from Compass Cove. There’s also Rock N’ Jump, 810 Billiards & Bowling and Fun Warehouse for breaking a sweat. For spectators, the NCAA and NFL playoffs, NBA, NHL and more are featured at local sports bars.
Theaters:
The Grand Strand’s rich live theater scene makes the transition from holiday shows to their regular programs during the winter. Catch the last of the holiday-themed performances with The Carolina Opry’s “Christmas Show of the South (Jan. 1-5) and “Christmas at Pirates Voyage” (Jan. 1-4). During the transition, several local performers get the opportunity to present their own showcases, like the Greg Rowles Country & Gospel Special (Jan. 10) and The Ricky Mokel Comedy Show (Jan. 25) at the Alabama Theater.
Best of all, guests at Compass Cove Oceanfront Resort don’t even have to leave the property to find lots of fun and entertainment. Enjoy the indoor pools, hot tubs and water slides in any kind of weather at our indoor aquatic facilities, and excellent food and drink at the on-site Compass Rose Restaurant and Crow’s Nest Lounge. For those chilly days and nights, take advantage of free and unlimited DVD rentals through our Brittain Rewards program and hold a family movie night.
